Membrane Solutions for Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Process-oriented membrane selection for variable industrial wastewater, solids separation and reuse objectives.

Application context

The treatment problem

Industrial wastewater can vary significantly by production line, batch, cleaning cycle and season. Suspended solids may appear alongside emulsified oil, dissolved organics, metals, hardness or salts.

A membrane can provide a defined separation step, but upstream chemistry, biological treatability and downstream concentrate management remain part of the process.

Important: Representative samples and variability matter. A single laboratory report may not capture peak or upset conditions.

Possible treatment train

Build the process around the contaminants

Conceptual sequence only. Bench or pilot work, mass balance and specialist process design may be required.

Membrane role

Where different membrane technologies may fit

Each membrane has a distinct separation role. Dissolved contaminants and biological conversion may require other treatment processes.

Ceramic membrane

Robust solids separation where approved material and cleaning limits fit the wastewater.

MBR

Biomass retention after biological treatment; not a substitute for biological conversion.

UF

Particulate and colloid control with polymeric or ceramic options.

RO

Reduction of dissolved salts after suitable pretreatment.

Selection considerations

Information that changes the design

  • Industry and production process
  • Composite and peak water analyses
  • Oil form: free, dispersed or emulsified
  • TSS, COD fractions and biodegradability
  • Metals, hardness, silica and scaling risks
  • Temperature, pH and cleaning chemicals
  • Target discharge or reuse standard
  • Sludge and concentrate disposal

FAQ

Industrial wastewater membrane FAQ

Can one membrane treat all industrial contaminants?

No. Different contaminants require different physical, chemical and biological processes.

Is pilot testing recommended?

For variable or difficult wastewater, bench and pilot work can reduce selection risk and establish cleaning and flux assumptions.

What should I send first?

Provide the industry, process source, flow profile, water analyses, existing treatment and required effluent.
