To review an MBR membrane replacement, start with the existing brand, exact model, drawings, dimensions, membrane area and connection details. Then verify the tank, design flow, MLSS, wastewater, aeration, operating cycle and cleaning limits; a similar-looking module is not proof of compatibility.

Tank and process data that change the decision

Provide the membrane-tank length, width, operating depth, lifting clearance, module spacing and available aeration arrangement. For a new module size, check whether the cassette, headers and maintenance access remain workable.

Also provide average, peak and instantaneous design flow; wastewater type; temperature; MLSS; current flux and TMP; permeate/relaxation/backwash sequence; air-scour rate; cleaning chemistry and cleaning frequency.

Element-only, cassette or complete-module replacement

An element-only proposal may be practical when the existing frame, seals, headers and aeration system remain serviceable and the new element interfaces are approved. A cassette or complete-module replacement may be needed when structural dimensions, headers, connections or air distribution cannot be retained.

The supply boundary should state whether it includes elements, frames, permeate headers, air headers, hoses, seals, lifting parts, drawings and commissioning support.

How preliminary compatibility should be decided

  1. Confirm the original product and revision.
  2. Compare dimensions and mechanical interfaces.
  3. Compare effective membrane area and hydraulic mode.
  4. Check the tank, aeration and cleaning sequence.
  5. Review wastewater, MLSS, temperature, flux and TMP history.
  6. Obtain the proposed product datasheet and approved drawing.
  7. Use written technical confirmation before purchase.

When direct replacement should not be claimed

Do not claim direct replacement when the original model cannot be identified, drawings conflict with measured dimensions, connections or aeration cannot be matched, the process operates outside approved limits, or the reason for premature failure has not been investigated.

Changing membrane area without reviewing biological and hydraulic loading can also move the system away from its intended operating point.
