Ceramic flat sheet membranes are rigid inorganic filtration elements that can provide solid-liquid separation in selected water and wastewater processes. Their value depends on application fit, verified product limits and system design.
How the technology works
Pressure difference draws water through a porous separation layer while retained solids accumulate on the feed surface. Aeration, crossflow, relaxation or cleaning controls the retained layer depending on system design.
Where it may fit
Potential applications include industrial wastewater clarification, ceramic MBR biomass separation, mining-water solids control, reuse pretreatment and particulate control before RO.
Important limitations
Microfiltration or ultrafiltration does not generally remove dissolved salts or all dissolved organics. Pretreatment, biological conversion or downstream RO may still be required.
Selection and lifecycle questions
Review flux basis, temperature, TMP, cleaning chemistry, aeration, module access, replacement strategy and lifecycle economics. For difficult water, pilot evidence can be more useful than generic nominal data.
